DEATH ROAD
FULL DAY
Originally built in the 1930s by prisoners of Bolivia’s war with Paraguay, this narrow, winding road descends from the heights of La Paz (“La Cumbre” located 4,650 meters above the leel sea) to the forest region known as Los Yungas at around 1200 meters above sea level. Before a new, safer road for vehicles was built, more than 200 people died each year on this “Road of Death.” Today, the old road is used by groups in search of adrenaline. Most of the 80 kilometer ride is downhill. Surrounded by mountainous terrain and terrifying precipices, this winding road winds its way through stunning scenery and the scenery changes from high snow-capped mountains to jungle right in front of your eyes.
PROGRAM
The tour begins with the pickup of the passengers, followed by a journey towards the top of the Cordillera Real. From this point, breathtaking views of the surrounding mountain landscape, including Huayna Potosí and Mururata, await. Setting off on our bikes along a paved path from the summit, we get to appreciate the beauty of the subtropical landscape. A brief stop allows for a snack before we continue our ascent, with the assistance of a support vehicle.
Afterward, the next leg of the journey commences with an exhilarating descent along the old gravel road, leading us through the lush tropical region, where the verdant hues of the jungle come into view. This thrilling path winds its way down more than 2000 meters, passing precipices and mountain-fed waterfalls. Our ultimate destination is the village of Yolosa, where we will then proceed to a designated location for a buffet lunch and a refreshing swim in the local pool.
Having savored our time at Yolosa, we embark on the return journey to La Paz, reminiscing about the unforgettable experiences and memories created throughout the day. The Death Road biking tour promises an extraordinary adventure that will leave travelers with lasting impressions of Bolivia’s natural beauty and captivating landscapes.
